I find the entire field of stem cell research very interesting. It has far reaching applications, as these are the progenitor cells to all cells and systems within our bodies. Not that our current medications do not offer benefit, but what else can heal our bodies better than own bodies?
In looking into the applications of g-csf, I was surprised that not only is it being used for stem cell collection before chemotherapy for immunorecovery, but also just as a straight injection to stimulate stem cells for neural repair. In many animal models it has been shown to be not only neuroprotective, but also offer benefits in neural recovery after damage. This is now being translated into early phase I studies in humans. You can imagine the applications in diseases like MS or spinal cord injuries!
On the lighter and less scientific side of this blog, Tatyana (as Tanya has become named by Dr. Fedorenko) and I had the opportunity to escape from the hospital to do some exploring in and around the hotel. We found a neat little market tucked away inside an ornate building complex. Seems like a popular place as we saw about 5 wedding parties having their celebrations and pictures there. Enjoy the pics!
