In order for a successful apheresis procedure, the doctors want to collect a minimum of 1.5million stem cells per kg of body weight. They are even happier at 2 million/kg. Hey, why stop there...how about 2.9 million per kg!! We hit our limit and with a little something left in the tank!! This means I don't need to repeat it tomorrow and can have a day to let my body rest.
Just as another example of how amazing our bodies are and how they work on autopilot. My total leukocytes run fairly high at rest, measuring about 7.63. Today when Dr. Fedorenko measured them prior to apheresis, they were down at 6. Why? My body was registering the increase in the stem cells in the blood stream (from the stim shots) and started down regulating my leukocytes! Homeostasis at it's best...bet you wished you never skipped that grade 12 science class! Just another reason why we are amazing beings....
